The Myths and Truths about Gun Ownership

If guns were commonly used for defense we would hear about it on the news.

Actually many of the self defense uses of guns do make it into the local news. The story is almost never on the front page or the lead story, and rarely runs for more than one day. These stories are almost never picked up by national news organizations. By many accounts, guns are used for self defense in this country up to 2.5 million times per year, yet the reporting of such usage is nearly invisible to the public.

Conversely, if a gun is used in an aggressive situation, the story often runs on the front page, or as the lead story. Sometimes the story persists for many days, with all sorts of analysis, and usually a call for more control of guns.
