Ball Cap Comfort With Hearing Protection

Like many of you, I have noted that the button on the top of a ball cap interferes with wearing typical hearing protection. For years I adjusted the hearing protection so that it was forward of the button, or rearward of the button. Finally just last year it occurred to me. Get rid of the button. I'd recommend that you practice this technique a few times on old hats before you try it on your favorite hat or a brand new hat.

After this process you can wear your hearing protection normally, but without the pain when the button is pushed into the top of your head.

A new hat just came from LA Police Gear, and it has the typical button.
Find your oldest dullest pair of wire cutters for this job. They tend to
snag less on the fabric of the hat.

Get a good grip on the button with the wire cutters as shown, and squeeze. Sometimes one
has to wiggle the hat at the same time the wire cutters are squeezed, and eventually the button
will come off.

Usually the button comes off in two pieces, the fabric covered button
piece that is visible on the top of the hat, and a three pronged retainer
that is visible from the inside of the hat. As you can see the hat is
no worse for wear.
