Shooting Sports Overview

Parma Rod and Gun Club hosts a large number of shooting sports activities at our ranges. Below are some of the more frequent events we hold and a short description of each.

Long Range Tactical Rifle

Long Range Tactical Rifle (LRTR) is the sport of engaging targets with precision fire from specialized bolt action or semi-auto rifles. Courses of fire can test the limits of you and your equipment by inducing time limits and complicated field positions. Targets can be as small as a ¼” at 100 yards or less to 10” or bigger at 1000 yards or beyond. In some cases you will be given the distance to a target, in other cases you will have to range the target yourself using a variety of different methods. To make the shot you could be standing, sitting or prone. You could be shooting off a nice flat concrete pad or be sitting on a rock in a fast moving creek.

For the most part, LRTR shoots are about having fun and learning. We usually charge a minimal fee that covers the cost of materials. Once in a while we’ll have a sponsor come in with a “prize” event that will attract some good shooters from around the North West, but for the most part it’s all about having fun and increasing your rifle skills with like-minded people. So if you’ve always wanted to shoot in an event like this, but have hesitated because you don’t think you have the skills, then come on out. I guarantee that we’ll have you hitting targets at 1000 yards before the day is over.

Long Range Varmint Sihouette

Long Range Varmint Silhouette (LRVS) is a fun, challenging rifle match which will test and develop your abilities in the arena of precision rifle shooting. Shooters are faced with having to change target and range for each shot. The size of the targets are such that minor corrections for changing conditions are common on a shot-to-shot basis, requiring the shooter to rapidly assess the conditions prior to each shot. Shooters engage targets from 330 to 850 yards, depending on the class qualification. Many competitors find that the most challenging aspect of the match is to assemble and maintain a consistent rifle/optics/load system, as well as pay closer attention to the fundamentals of positioning and trigger control. Suggested minimum requirements for the match are a 1 MOA-accuracy centerfire rifle with an optic of at least 10x magnification which can be rapidly adjusted for impact. Typical competitors use a heavy-barrel bolt-action rifle in 6mm – .30cal chamberings, with a 15-20x target scope and graduated reticle.

Precision Rifle Series (PRS)

Precision Rifle Series (PRS) is a long-range and precision rifle-based shooting sports organization. The Precision Rifle Series is recognized as the leading organizing body for local, regional, national, and international precision rifle matches, including comprehensive score tracking and competitive structure. The competition seeks to find a balance between speed and precision, and targets can both have known (KD) and unknown distances (UKD). Shooting distances can vary from between 10 and 1,200 meters or yards, and thus the competitor needs to have good knowledge of their firearm’s ballistics. The primary focus is on long range shooting, and a competition usually consists of several courses of fire. Each course usually has a set maximum time (par time), and the shooter is awarded points according to how many targets they manage to hit during that time. Targets presented are usually relatively small and made of steel to simplify scoring.

2-Gun

A 2-gun match is a practical shooting competition that involves the use of both a pistol and a rifle, typically a carbine, requiring competitors to transition between two firearms during stages. These matches are designed to simulate real-world scenarios, testing marksmanship, speed, and physical endurance under stress. The courses of fire vary significantly between events, with stages often including a mix of paper, steel, and reactive targets such as clay pigeons, and may involve shooting from various positions including prone, standing, and supported or unsupported positions. Distances can range from arm’s length to over 300 yards, depending on the match.

3-Gun

A 3-gun match is a dynamic shooting sport that test competitors speed, accuracy and ability to transition between three firearm platforms: a handgun, a rifle and a shotgun. These matches are designed to simulate realistic tactical or defensive scenarios, often referred to as “combat” matches, where participants navigate obstacle-filled stages while engaging various targets. Each stage is unique and typically involves moving through different positions—such as prone, kneeling, or on the move—while using one or more firearms in sequence. The number of stages varies, with most matches featuring between five and twelve stages. Some stages may require the use of two or all three firearms, and targets can include paper silhouettes, reactive steel plates, clay pigeons, swinging pins, or other moving objects. Distances range from as close as 1 yard to as far as 500 yards, depending on the stage and match design.

Action Steel

Action Steel a set of shooting sports in which the competitors try to unite the three principles of precision, power, and speed, by using a firearm of a certain minimum power factor to score as many points as possible during the shortest time (or sometimes within a set maximum time). While scoring systems vary between organizations, each measures the time in which the course is completed, with penalties for inaccurate shooting. The courses are called “stages”, and are shot individually by the shooters. Usually the shooter must move and shoot from several positions, fire under or over obstacles and in other unfamiliar positions. There are no standard exercises or set arrangement of the targets, and the courses are often designed so that the shooter must be inventive, and therefore the solutions of exercises sometimes vary between shooters.

Steel Challenge

The Steel Challenge is a speed shooting competition governed by the Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA) that consists of eight standardized stages with steel targets in three sizes; small circular, large circular and rectangular targets. Competitors are scored solely by the time it takes them to complete each stage, and the match winner is the competitor with the lowest overall time.
